Move money when and how you choose*

At TIAA Direct, you have choices. You can make one-time and recurring transfers between your deposit accounts online, using the TIAA Direct Mobile Banking app, Text Banking, Telephone Banking and at ATMs.

You can also transfer money online between TIAA Direct and your accounts at other financial institutions, also known as your ‘external’ accounts.

With Transfers, you can:

  • Immediately transfer money between your TIAA Direct accounts
  • Transfer money between TIAA Direct and your accounts at other financial institutions (which takes up to three business days)
  • Save regularly by setting up recurring transfers from Interest Checking to High Yield Savings, for example.
  • Schedule one-time transfers up to a year in advance.

How to get started

  • Log in at tiaadirect.com.
  • Scroll down and select Actions (to the right of your bank account) then, Transfer Money.
  • You can transfer money between your TIAA Direct accounts or between your TIAA Direct and external accounts (online only). Here’s how to add an external account.

    Are there limits on the withdrawals I can make from my savings and money market accounts?

    Yes, banking regulations limit the number of certain types of withdrawals and transfers that can be made from savings and money market accounts to 6 per statement period (e.g. Jan 1 – Feb 1 or May 15 – June 15). Here’s a quick rundown of what does (and does not) count toward the limit:

  • How do I transfer money from my TIAA Direct bank account to my TIAA brokerage account?
    Log into tiaa.org and go to your brokerage account. Under Actions, choose “View account details.” Click the Transfer Money tab then select Electronic Transfer. If your TIAA Direct bank account is already linked to your brokerage account simply select it from the “Bank Account Number” list, then enter your transaction details. If you don’t see your TIAA Direct bank account, you can link it to your brokerage account by clicking “Add an ACH Bank Account” and following the prompts. Your accounts will be linked in 3-5 business days.

  • How do I receive a wire?

    Funds can be wired to your TIAA Direct bank accounts (to fund a new account or to transfer funds into any existing accounts except CDs) from any U.S. bank.
